A standoff in Redfield lasted over six hours Monday, but ended with no one injured and the suspect in custody.
According to authorities, the suspect 30-year-old Matthew Mathern of Redfield entered the Community Memorial Hospital Avera in Redfield around 8:30 a.m. with a 10-year-old boy and a weapon. He barricaded himself in a room with the child and with that it became a hostage situation.
Officers from the Aberdeen Police Department, Brown County Sheriff’s office, Spink County Sheriff’s office, DCI Game Fish and Parks, FBI and state highway patrol were all on scene to try and negotiate a peaceful resolution. Around 11:25 a.m. negotiators were able to get Mathern to release the child without incident.
Talks continued until about 1:30 p.m. when negotiators were able to get Mathern to surrender and end the standoff. Along with the handgun Mathern used in the incident, he also had an AK-47 and two clips with 30 rounds in each stashed in his vehicle.
