Today across South Dakota citizens are encouraged to celebrate Native American Day as a way to pay respects to those people who inhabited this land before Europeans arrived.  The day also serves as Columbus Day for most of the country, but in South Dakota, the day was changed in 1989 by a decree from then governor George S. Mickelson.  South Dakota is one of four states in total that have a day set aside to honor Native American Culture and contributions to their respective states.
