The South Dakota Department of Health reports two confirmed cases of West Nile in 2022. The two cases are in Minnehaha and Spink counties. West Nile is transferred via mosquito bites and can lead to swelling of the brain and spinal cord. Since West Nile was first reported in the United States since 2002, there have been 2,681 confirmed cases in the United States and 47 deaths.
