Aberdeen City Council approves first reading of 2024 city budget that tops $100 million

The Aberdeen City Council at its regular meeting Tuesday approved the first reading of the city’s 2024 budget. The council met Tuesday instead of Monday due to the Labor Day holiday. The council approved the first reading of the budget at just over $100 million.

The council also discussed three amendments to the budget, passing one. The amendment that passed sought to move $30,000 from the Aberdeen Development Corp’s $127,000, which would have been used to hire an economic development director.

Councilman David Novstrop got the amendment talks going, seeking to provide more help to the city financial office. According to Novstrop its a moment to put the council’s mark on the budget process…

Councilwoman Erin Fouberg agreed with Novstrop more eyes were needed on a city budget expanding to over $100 million…

Councilwoman Tiffany Langer expressed discomfort in voting to move money around at this stage in the budget due to how impromptu it was proposed…

Outgoing city manager Joe Gaa said council members can amend the budget at any time and often due as the year goes on.
