The Aberdeen Police Department used non-lethal force to subdue a suspect Thursday. According to a release from police, officers were called about a man swinging a machete towards people in public in the 500 block of South State Street. Due to the proximity of the incident, the Police Department suggested Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, the Aberdeen YMCA and Roncalli Elementary School were placed on lock down status. Police found the suspect and claim he would not cooperate, attempting to walk away. An officer then deployed a less-lethal bean bag shotgun to gain compliance. The suspect has been detained and faces charges including aggravated assault, obstructing law enforcement and open container in public.
