Extensive winter kill of fish leads to restocking efforts

Plans to undertake fish restocking efforts are in the works according to South Dakota Game Fish and Parks. The South Dakota Game Fish and Parks Commission heard from the state fisheries program manager Jake Davis at its regular meeting last week, where he explained larger-than-average winter kill has impacted the state’s fish population. Winter kill is the phenomenon where fish die due to a lack of dissolved oxygen in waters during the winter months. Winter kill conditions are determined by the amount of ice and snow cover and depths of a particular body of water.
