Federal authorities being brought in to investigate officer involved shooting in Corson county

(Dakota Radio Group News – Pierre, SD) A man is in a hospital in Bismarck, North Dakota, after an incident in rural Corson County yesterday (June 20, 2023).

Information from Corson County Sheriff Alan Dale says his office and the Bureau of Indian Affairs Police Department we called for a report of a white male threatening suicide-by-cop at a residence in rural Watauga, South Dakota. Before officers arrived, the subject left the residence in a vehicle.

Dale says at approximately 6:45pm (6:41pm MDT), law enforcement officers located the subject in the vehicle in Bullhead, South Dakota. While attempting to take the subject into custody, the subject brandished a firearm before returning to his vehicle and fleeing the location of the traffic stop.

Following a brief pursuit, Dale says the subject came to a stop in the parking lot of the Bullhead District Building and again brandished a firearm. After repeated attempts to peacefully resolve the incident, the subject was shot one time by law enforcement personnel.

The subject was transported by Standing Rock EMS to the Sanford Hospital in Bismarck, North Dakota, where he remains in serious condition. The man’s name, age and where he’s from have not been released at this time.
