Fire in Estelline leads to drugs being found and child services called

(KXLG – Watertown, SD) During the afternoon on Thursday, January 23, 2025, sheriff’s deputies with the Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office were called to a residence in the 300 block of 4th Street North in Estelline for a potential probation violation involving drugs.

Upon arrival, deputies found two individuals and three juvenile children living in the house. One individual was on federal and state probation and stayed at home in violation of his conditions. Inside the residence, deputies recovered a hypodermic needle, a baggie containing marijuana residue, and another baggie containing methamphetamine from a makeup bag. Additional hypodermic needles, drug paraphernalia, and marijuana were found scattered throughout the house and within reach of the children.

Child Protective Services were called to the scene and took custody of the children.

37-year-old Brandon McGuire of Estelline was arrested for Unauthorized Ingestion of Controlled Substance (Class 5 Felony), Keeping Place for Use of Controlled Substances (Class 5 Felony), and Inhabiting Room Where Controlled Substances Illegally Stored (Class 1 Misdemeanor). He is currently being held at the Brookings Detention Center on a $2,000 cash-only bond.

36-year-old Tiffany Mick of Estelline was arrested for Unauthorized Ingestion of Controlled Substance (Class 5 Felony), Possession of Marijuana (Class 1 Misdemeanor), Keeping Place for Use of Controlled Substances (Class 5 Felony), Inhabiting Room Where Controlled Substances Illegally Stored (Class 1 Misdemeanor), Ingesting Substance for the Purpose of Becoming Intoxicated (Class 1 Misdemeanor), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (Class 2 Misdemeanor), and Child Neglect (Class 4 Felony). She is being held at the Brookings Detention Center on a $2,000 cash-only bond.

The Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation. The individuals have not yet made their initial court appearances and are presumed innocent under the U.S. Constitution.
