Former President Jimmy Carter celebrates his 100th birthday today. Born in Plains Georgia, Carter would go on to be a member of the Georgia State Senate representing the 14th district to the 76th governor of Georgia before becoming the 39th president of the United States from January of 1977 to January of 1981. Following his presidency, Carter would go on to do much philanthropy including a lot of work with Habitat for Humanity. Carter has been in hospice care since February of 2023 after a series of short hospital stays. Though the family has only said Carter is battling an unspecified terminal illness. Carter is the longest-lived former US President, and surpassed Herbert Hoover as the longest retired president in 2012. Carter has credited his longevity to a good marriage, his wife Rosalynn Smith passing away in 2023. The two had been married since 1946. Carter himself has joked recently he is hanging on to vote for Kamala Harris this coming November.
