Former US congressman and US Senator Jim Abourezk passed away Friday at the age of 92.
Abourezk passed away shortly after being entered into hospice care.
Abourezk grew up on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and became known for his signature piece of legislation, the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978. He served in the US House from 1971 to 1973 and US Senate from 1973 to 1979.
Abourezk was the first Arab American U.S. Senator as well.
