Former South Dakota U.S. Representative and Senator Tim Johnson has passed away at the age of 77. His passing was announced by a family spokesperson Tuesday. A Vermillion native, Johnson was a Democrat who served five terms as South Dakota’s congressional representative and three terms as a South Dakota US Senator, succeeded by current US Senator Mike Rounds. While in the Senate he served as the chair of the Senate Banking committee from 2011 until the end of his term in 2015. In all Johnson had over 30 years of public service in state and federal government and is the last Democrat to serve in a statewide office in South Dakota.
