South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem has penned a letter along with eight other fellow Republican governors across the country, urging the NCAA to change its competition policy regarding transgender athletes. In a statement about the letter, governor Noem and her colleagues argue the policy should be changed to protect women’s sports and ensure fairness in competition. The NCAA currently allows athletes to compete in the sport or on the team that identifies with their gender. According to the NCAA there are over 520,000 student athletes competing in NCAA events. Of those students in 2022 only 32 of them were openly transgender.
