South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem has introduced HB1075 which if passed would end the tax on groceries in South Dakota. The bill has been introduced by Representative Mary Fitzgerald and newly elected state GOP chairman state senator John Wiik. Repealing the food tax was a major campaign promise Noem made while running for re-election late last year. According to her office, this proposed tax cut would save South Dakota tax payers an estimated $102 million. There is a strong apatite in Pierre among lawmakers to cut a tax this legislative session, but some Republicans would rather see a property tax cut rather than the grocery tax repeal.
