Gov. Noem vetoes HB1209 which would have allowed hemp products to contain up to 5 percent THC

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem vetoed House Bill 1209 Thursday. The bill would have increased the amount of THC allowed in industrial hemp to five percent, effectively classifying marijuana as hemp. In her veto statement, Governor Noem claims only two other states allow for hemp products to contain up to five percent THC, New York and Colorado. Those two states have legalized recreational marijuana. Noem points out voters in South Dakota rejected recreational marijuana at the polls last November. She goes on to say if this bill became law it would jeopardize the clearly expressed will of the people.
