Lawmakers to receive a pay cut this session due to state’s median household income drop

Lawmakers in Pierre will be receiving a pay cut next year. According to South Dakota Public Radio, due to a drop in median household income in South Dakota, lawmakers will also see a pay cut, down from about $14,800 to $13,400. This is the first decline in pay for South Dakota lawmakers since they tied their salaries to the state’s median household income in 2018. South Dakota is one of 10 states in the nation that saw a drop in median househlod income in 2022. The US Census Bureau estimates South Dakota median household income has dropped approximately 9 percent since 2022.
