NBA legend Bill Russell passed away Sunday at the age of 88. His family made the announcement. Russell was an 11 time NBA champion, captain of a gold-medal-winning U.S. Olympic team and the first black head coach of any North American professional sports team. Born in Louisiana, but growing up in California, Russell played college basketball at the University of San Francisco where he won back to back National Championships in 1955 and 1956. He was drafted in the first round of the 1956 NBA draft by the then St. Louis Hawks, but was quickly traded to the Boston Celtics where he spent 10 seasons as a player and 13 as a coach. He was a 12-time All-Star selection, named MVP five times and is an basketball hall of famer as both a coach and player.
