The execution date has been scheduled for Rodney Berget following a warrant of execution being issued by judge Bradley Zell. Berget was found guilty and sentenced to death for the murder of correction officer Ronald ‘R.J.’ Johnson during an escape attempt from the state penitentiary in Sioux Falls in 2011. The execution has been scheduled for the hours of 12:01 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. during the week of October 28th through Nov. 3rd of 2018. It is up to the Warden of the state penitentiary to choose a specific date and notify the public within 48 hours. Three people in South Dakota have been executed by the state since the death penalty was reinstated in the state in 1979. Berget will be the first since 2012 and third under Governor Dennis Daugaard.
