KCCR - Pierre, SD
Pierre police used less lethal munitions to end a potentially dangerous incident early Friday morning. Police responded to the 200 block of South Poplar Avenue around one-AM to a report of a male subject waving a gun around in a parking lot. Upon arrival, police made contact with an 18 year-old male, identified as Russell Hanson. Hanson told officers he had a gun and told officers to shoot him before he shot the officers. Pierre Police Captain Bryan Walz says officers took up defensive positions and began attempts to speak with Hanson to de-escalate the situation. Police negotiated with Hanson for about an hour. It was during that time when the less-lethal munitions were deployed, striking Hanson. That allowed officers to take Hanson into custody. He was transported to Avera St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment related to impacts from the less lethal munitions. After Hanson was medically cleared he was transported to the Hughes County Jail on charges of Aggravated Assault and Underage Consumption. An investigation determined Hanson was not in possession of a gun as he had claimed. Units from the Stanley County Sheriff, U-S Marshal’s Service and A-M-R Ambulance assisted Pierre police with the incident.
