One person died Tuesday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash that occurred west of Brookings.
Names of the two people involved are not being released pending notification of family members.
A 2016 Freightliner semi-truck pulling a hazardous materials trailer was westbound on U.S. Highway 14 when the driver activated his hazard lights to stop at the railroad crossing near mile marker 415. As the driver completed the check and the semi-truck and trailer began moving forward again, a 1998 Chevrolet CK 109 pickup rear-ended the trailer.
The 47-year-old driver of the pickup, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died of injuries sustained in the crash. The 42-year-old male driver of the semi-truck was not injured and he was wearing a seatbelt. No charges are pending.
Damage to the trailer led to the leaking of less than one gallon of sodium hydroxide. The spill was contained by emergency responders.
South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
