The Brown County Commission tabled a request by Aberdeen City officials to pump more than 1 million gallons of water out of a holding pond between two runways at the Aberdeen Regional Airport. According to city transportation director Rich Krokel, the pond is attracting large numbers of migrating waterfowl, causing safety hazards for planes. However, flooding of area rivers and streams makes releasing large amounts of water a further flooding hazard in some areas. The two entities will revisit the situation in a few days and determine if a larger pump will be necessary and safe for others to remove that water. Until then, the airport may need to resort to lethal measures in dealing with the birds as a last option.
