The office of the South Dakota Attorney General released numbers Tuesday, recapping the annual statewide crime report for 2018. According to the numbers arrests are up approximately 900 to about 45,000 total in 2018, a consistent trend since 2010, but also consistent with population growth.
Drug arrests made up 18 percent of all arrests in 2018 according to the report. However, experts argue, that doesn’t necessarily mean more people are doing drugs, rather law enforcement has been cracking down harder on drug offenses.
Overall there were less killings, burglaries, juvenile arrests and fewer DUIs in 2018 as well.
