The citywide elections will take place next Tuesday June 4th and early voting is already underway.  Along with the mayoral election is a city council election for a seat from the northwest district. 

 

Jennifer Slaight-Hanson is seeking re-election and challenging her is Josh Rife.  Rife is a native of Aberdeen who has spent 28 years of his life in the city, all within the northwest district.

 

When asked what issue he focuses on first while campaigning door to door, Rife says safety first comes to mind.  He specifically pointed out the rise in methamphetamine and other drug crime as a problem.  According to Rife, he has not only sought out the police’s perspective on the issue, but also people who have gone through the criminal justice system to give him a full perspective on the issue…

 

 

 

 

 

Rife also wants to help tackle the city’s water issues.  Growth in Aberdeen has been consistent the past number of years which has lead to a strain on the city’s water supply.  That demand is going to get worse with the new AGP soybean plant coming to town.  According to Rife, expanding water sources could be a time consuming, expensive task…

 

 

 

 

Finally, Josh talked about the city’s relationship with the local economy.  With retail stores, restaurants and hotels closing in Aberdeen, Rife feels the city has some tools to try and help spur new growth…
