The South Dakota Department of Agriculture reports trees living in South Dakota are up a hefty amount from five years ago. According to numbers released by the Department of Ag, 601 million trees were living in South Dakota in 2018. That is a 7.1 percent increase from 2013. Gregory Josten from the department of ag tells KOTA tv in Rapid City, that extra tree growth comes from the Ponderosa Pine’s ability to regenerate in the Black Hills. With the added trees, department officials now turn to battling forest fires and Mountain Pine Beetle infestations among other things.
