The State of South Dakota went through with its execution of 63-year-old Charles Rhines last night at 7:39 p.m., hours after its initial scheduled time of 1:30 p.m.  Rhines had several appeals still alive Monday, looking for a stay of execution.  In the end both the State Supreme Court and the US Supreme Court rejected his please and he was ultimately put to death by lethal injection, the only way the State of South Dakota allows itself to conduct an execution.  Rhines was put to death for the murder of 22-year-old Donnivan Schaeffer, an employee of a Rapid City donut shop Schafer was robbing.  He becomes the 20th person in the state’s history put to death.
