Today is May 5th or otherwise known as Cinco de Mayo. The day is considered a holiday in Mexico as it commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla on May 5th 1862. This took place during what is considered by scholars the time period of the Mexican Revolution known as the “Second Federal Republic" from 1864 to 1928. Today, the holiday holds more significance in the United State’s than in Mexico and has evolved to more of a celebration of Mexican-American culture. Contrary to popular belief however, the date does not celebrate Mexican Independence from Spain, as that is actually on September 16th with Miguel Hildalgo’s famous “Cry of Dolores” speech.
