The South Dakota Department of Health announced 33 new cases of COVID-19 Sunday, pushing the total number of cases to 4,993 quickly approaching 5,000 since the start of the pandemic.
No new deaths were reported Sunday, but three deaths were confirmed on Saturday bringing the total as of Sunday to 62.
One of those deaths was confirmed to be a 23-year-old mother from Huron. Blanca Ramirez Gonzalez contracted the virus working at the Alpena beef jerky plant. She leaves behind a husband and three children.
According to the state department of health, the majority of cases of COVID-19 in South Dakota are people between the ages of 20-29 and 30-39.
