South Dakota Public Broadcasting reports South Dakota taxpayers will be footing the bill to the tune of $350,000 for the Mt. Rushmore fireworks display Friday. According to South Dakota’s open checkbook website where spending can be checked, a check for half the amount has already been cut for $175,000 to Pyro Spectaculars Inc. out of California. The Governor’s office and South Dakota Department of Tourism originally claimed the money would be covered through sponsorships. The money is coming out of the state’s future fund, which has a current balance of $23 million and is meant to be used for research and economic development according to state law.
