The expanded unemployment benefits created by Congress when it passed the CARES act at the beginning of the pandemic are set to expire next week. The aid is scheduled to end July 31st unless congress does something to extend the benefits. Those expanded benefits include an additional $600 a week during the pandemic. Most Republicans do not want to extend the aid further for fear they discourage unemployed individuals from looking for work, while most Democrats fear cutting the aid off would cause financial hardship for millions. There are currently 32 million Americans collecting unemployment benefits according to the Labor Department.
