(KWAT - Watertown, SD) Watertown police announced today that charges have been filed in the drug overdose death of a 24 year-old man last month.
Twenty four year-old Tyler Mertz was found unconscious at a residence in the 700-block of East Kemp Avenue on the night of September 11th.
He was taken to Prairie Lakes Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police Captain Steve Rehorst says an autopsy was performed, and the cause of death was determined to be a fentanyl overdose.
Following an in-depth investigation by Watertown police and the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, police arrested 25 year-old Ricardo “Ricky” Ortiz of Watertown for supplying the drugs that caused Mertz’s death.
Ortiz is charged with Felony Distribution of a Controlled Substance.
He was on parole at the time of his arrest for a previous drug distribution conviction.
