Following the 2020 election, Democrats and Republicans have named their leadership for the new session of congress come January. South Dakota Senator John Thune has been named the majority whip in the senate, making him the second-highest ranking Republican in the Senate. Senator Thune was first elected majority whip for the 116th congress which began in January 2019. In a statement on the appointment, Senator Thune thanked his Republican colleagues for the position and says his status as majority whip helps better serve the people of South Dakota. Which party is in the majority in the Senate will be determined by two run off elections in Georgia this January.
