A bill which would create an online voter registration system in South Dakota passed out of committee last week and will go to the senate floor to face a vote this week.  South Dakota Secretary of State Steve Barnett spoke in favor of the bill and says it provides a host of benefits…

 

 

 

 

 

Republican Senator Jim Bolin of Canton offered an amendment to the bill which would require those using the online resource, first register to vote in person.  Voters would then be allowed to use the online resources to change registration information…

 

 

 

 

Democrat Senator Tony Heinert of Mission argued against Bolin’s amendment saying it gut the purpose of the bill…

 

The bill passed as amendment 8-1 with Heinert voting nay after the amendment passed.
