Yankton man to be resentenced according to SD Supreme Court

The South Dakota Supreme Court has ordered a Yankton man to be re-sentenced on manslaughter charges.  According to the court, Jameson Mitchell pleaded guilty to fatally shooting Lucas Smith outside a Yankton bar in 2019 after the two got into a fight inside the bar and were thrown out by security.  A circuit court judge sentenced Mitchell to 124 years in prison, more than twice the amount of time the prosecutors recommended.  The court announced the circuit judge’s decision treated Mitchell as the sole person responsible for the ordeal and did not take into account Smith’s criminal conduct.
