State of South Dakota sends millions of dollars back to the federal government in unused COVID-19 housing support

The state of South Dakota has sent millions of dollars back to the federal government, which went unused during the COVID-19 pandemic.  The funds were allocated to the state to help with housing assistance.  According to South Dakota News Watch the state received about $271 million in federal funding to pay rent and utilities of low-income residents who fell behind because of COVID-19.  However, only about 9.2 percent of the total funds were distributed by the state.  State officials say not enough people applied to use said money.
