Augustana University has had its application to join the Summit League as a Division I athletics member declined.
According to a statement by the Summit League; "after a robust discussion the league has decided not to extend a new invite to members at this time."
Augustana released its own statement calling the decision disappointing, but says the school is remaining committed to its 10-year strategic plan to be a Division I institution by 2030. Per NCAA rules an institution cannot transition to Division I without having conference membership already in hand.
The Summit League has already offered membership to St. Thomas University in the twin cities. The school is trying to do something never done before, jump from Division III to Division I. That institution is awaiting a decision by the NCAA on the matter. The Tommies began looking at the Division I option after the conference it belonged to took the unprecidented step of kicking the school out because it simply was too successful in sports.
