The death of a former Minnesota hockey star Mark Pavelich has been ruled a suicide. According to the Minnesota medical examiner who investigated the death, Pavelich died of asphyxia. Pavelich’s body was found March 3rd at the Eagle’s Healing Nest in Sauk Center Minnesota. He was 63 years old and had been undergoing treatment as part of a civil commitment for assaulting his neighbor in August 2019. He was deemed incompetent to stand trial in that case. Pavelich was part of the “Miracle on Ice” US Olympic hockey team which upset the Soviet Union at the 1980 winter games and went on to win the gold medal that same Olympic season. He’s just the second member of that team to pass away, before him defenseman Bob Suter in 2014.
