Man on parole faces weapons charges in Clay County

(Dakota Radio Group News – Pierre, SD) Man on parole for killing classmate in Pierre in 2012 in custody in Clay County on weapons possession charges

A 26-year-old former resident of Pierre who went to prison after being convicted of killing a classmate when they were both 16, is back in custody in South Dakota after breaking parole.

Information from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office says Braiden Kit McCahren was arrested Jan. 6, 2023, on two counts of weapons possession after being convicted of a violent crime. A call to the Clay County Jail early this afternoon (Jan. 13, 2023) confirmed McCahren has not posted the $1000 cash only bond required for him to be released.

The charges are a Class 6 felony which is punishable by up to two years imprisonment in the state penitentiary, a fine of $4000 or both.

A jury convicted McCahren of 2nd Degree Murder in September 2014 for shooting and killing Dalton Williams in December 2012 in McCahren’s home in Pierre. He was tried in adult court and sentenced to 25 years in prison with 15 years suspended. McCahren was also sentenced to 15 years for Aggravated Assault on Tyus Youngberg, the third classmate in the room the day of the murder. That sentence was served at the same time as the murder conviction.

McCahren was released on parole in August 2020.

Williams was a sophomore at Pierre TF Riggs High School at the time of his death.
