(KMIT – Mitchell, SD) A motions hearing was held yesterday in the case of a Mount Vernon man accused of killing a young child while babysitting him. 35-year old Shawn Delancey has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in the death of a 3-year old in March. Delancey is charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter, and abuse or cruelty to a minor. The boy suffered fatal injuries while in Delancey’s care at his Mount Vernon residence. Yesterday’s hearing saw the prosecution and defense make several discovery requests, where the two sides exchange information and evidence to be used in trial. Judge Chris Giles set deadlines for those requests. Giles imposed a limited protective order and set certain parameters to prevent the dissemination of information and evidence. Delancey faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. No trial date has yet been set.
