Northern wrestling adds six student-athletes

Northern State University head coach Rocky Burkett announced the addition of six student-athletes to his 2023-24 roster. Kaden Broer (Onawa, Iowa), Clay Gates (Collinsville, Okla.), Jason Henschel Jr. (Wichita, Kan.), Tanner Meyers (Tea, S.D.), Braydon Mogle (Wellsville, Utah), and Travis Smith (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) will join the Wolves this fall.

Kaden Broer – 165, Onawa, Iowa / West Monona HS

Kaden Broer is a 6-foot, 165-pounder out of West Monona High School. He was a 4-year starter and team captain for the Spartans under the direction of head coach Blake More. Broer tallied 168 career prep victories, including 98 victories by fall. He was a 4-time all-district and all-conference selection, winning the Western Valley Conference Championship in 2022 and 2023. In addition, Broer placed seventh in 2022 and fourth in 2023 at the Iowa State Meet. He is the son of Clint and Vonda Broer.

Clay Gates – 133, Collinsville, Okla. / Collinsville HS

Clay Gates is a 5-foot-7, 133-pounder out of Collinsville High School. He was a 4-year starter and team captain for the Cardinal under the direction of head coach Mike Kiem. Gates was a 4-time regional and state place winner. He won three region championships, was a 2-time state runner-up, and the 2021 Oklahoma State Championship. Gates tallied 126 career victories, going 44-6 overall his senior season. Collinsville took second at the state tournament in 2022, after three state championships from 2020-22. He is the son of James and Denise Gates.

Jason Henschel Jr. – 133, Wichita, Kan. / Goddard HS / Pratt CC

Jason Henschel Jr. is a 5-foot-10, 133-pounder out of Goddard High School and Pratt Community College. As a prep, Henschel won three Kansas State Championships from 2018-20 under the direction of head coach Brett Means. He was a 3-time all-conference performer for the Lions. Henschel finished as the NJCAA National Runner-up in each of his seasons at Pratt CC with the team placing fourth (2021) and second (2023) at the national meet. He is the son of Jason Henschel.

Tanner Meyers197, Tea, S.D. / Canton HS

Tanner Meyers is a 5-foot-9, 197-pound wrestler out of Canton High School. He is a 4-year starter and team captain for the C-Hawks under the direction of head coach Jeremy Swenson. Meyers won the 2022 and 2023 South Dakota State Championship, finishing his career as a 4-time state placer. He holds the Canton school record with 191 takedowns in a season. In addition, he is a Fargo All-American, GFC Elite Champion, and ranked No. 1 in the state of South Dakota. He is the son of Kayleen and Andrew Meyers.

Braydon Mogle – 141, Wellsville, Utah / Mountain Crest HS / Northeastern JC

Braydon Mogle is a 5-foot-8, 141-pounder out of Mountain Crest High School and Northeastern Junior College. As a prep, he was a 3-year starter and team captain with 130 career wins. Mogle was a 2-time Utah State Finalist and 113-pound State Champion. He was a 2-time Fargo All-American, 6-time Greco State Champion, and 5-time Freestyle State Champion. Mogle earned back-to-back All-America honors at NEJC taking seventh in 2022 and fifth in 2023. He recorded 37 victories in those two seasons. He is the son of Mark and Sheila Mogle.

Travis Smith – 165, Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Simley HS

Travis Smith is a 5-foot-8, 165-pound wrestler out of Simley High School. He is a 5-year starter and 3-time place winner as a prep. Smith recorded 210 career wins and 111 career pins. Smith won the MSHSL State Championship in 2023 and was named to the all-tournament team in 2022 and 2023. In addition, he is a Fargo All-American, Cheesehead Champion, and Cadet Duals Freestyle All-Tournament team member. Smith is a 13-time MN/USA State Champion competing in folkstyle, freestyle, and Greco. He is the son of Brady and Jenni Smith.
