NSU men’s basketball signs Sturgis, SD product Jake Vliem

Northern State University head coach Saul Phillips announced the signing of Jake Vliem to a national letter of intent today. Vliem, a native of Sturgis, South Dakota will join Devon Brooke (Queen Creek, Ariz.) Isaiah Hagen (Orono, Minn.), and Ethan Russell (Aberdeen, S.D.) on the 2023-24 Wolves roster.

“We are really excited to have another Vliem in a Wolves uniform!” noted Phillips.

Vliem is a 6-foot-9, 215-pound center out of Sturgis Brown High School. He is the son of Northern State Hall of Famer Jeremy Vliem and Cindy Vliem. He was a 3-year starter for the Scoopers under the direction of head coach Derris Buus.

Phillips continued, “Jake’s size and athletic ability make him a very intriguing prospect. We know he is an extremely hard worker and feel like his best basketball is ahead of him! He is also a very good person and will be a great fit in our locker room.”

Vliem averaged 8.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, earning Black Hills All-Conference second team honors. The Scoopers reached the SoDak 16 in 2022-23. In addition, Vliem is a member of the ECI program out of Fargo and an all-conference performer in football.
