Rapid City officer involved shooting justified according to DCI

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley has released a report from the Department of Criminal Investigation looking into an officer involved shooting in Rapid City that left a suspect dead. According to the report, lethal force was justified in this instance. The incident in question occurred on May 30th 2023 when a Rapid City police officer responded to a call regarding two individuals refusing to leave a residence. One of the suspects, Kyle Whiting was prohibited from being at the residence and had several outstanding warrants for his arrest. He attempted to flea and enter another residences. That’s when, according to the report, he pointed a novelty gun lighter at the officer and the officer fired three shots, hitting Whiting with two. Whiting would die at a Rapid City Hospital due to his injuries.
