Roberts county sheriff announces installation of digital speed signs in Summit and Wilmot

(KXLG – Watertown, SD) The Roberts County Sheriff’s Office has announced the installation of digital speed signs in the cities of Summit and Wilmot, marking a significant step in their ongoing efforts to deter speeding and reduce injury crashes across the county.

Funded by the State of South Dakota’s Highway Safety Program, these digital signs are crucial to the county’s Highway Safety grant. The initiative aims to enhance road safety and minimize traffic accidents throughout South Dakota.

The importance of this project was underscored on June 22nd, 2024, during the installation of one of these signs. A deputy was programming a digital speed sign on SD 123 in Wilmot near Charles Street when a vehicle turned onto the road and accelerated at a highly reckless speed, passing the deputy. Recognizing the dangerous driving behavior, the deputy immediately initiated a pursuit. The chase continued through Wilmot, culminating in the driver’s apprehension and arrest. The charges include DUI, simple eluding a law enforcement officer, failure to stop at the signal of a law enforcement officer, and reckless driving.

This incident highlights the significance of placing the digital speed sign in a known problem area for speeding. The immediate impact of this technology has proven its value in enhancing road safety efforts.

The Sheriff’s Office wants to remind everyone that these signs are not just for show but critical in maintaining safety on our roads. They encourage all drivers to adhere to posted speed limits and drive responsibly. Together, we can make Roberts County a safer place for all.
