South Dakota native Becky Hammon has been named one of USA Today’s women of the year. The Rapid City Stevens product was named head coach of the Las Vegas Aces of the WNBA in December of 2021. She would lead the Aces to a WNBA championship in 2022, becoming the first rookie head coach to win a WNBA title. This comes after serving as an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs from 2020 to 2021. During a game against the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020, Spurs head coach Greg Popovich was ejected, allowing Hammon to step in as acting head coach, making her the first female acting head coach in NBA history.
