District 9 senator Republican Brent Hoffman of Sioux Falls has field a senate join resolution that if passed would go before the voters and establish new term limits for South Dakota lawmakers. Currently, lawmakers are allowed to serve up to four consecutive two-year terms in either the House or Senate. Once that is up, they are free to run for the other chamber. If Hoffamn’s resolution were made law, legislators would be allowed to serve eight years in the senate and eight in the House, not counting partial terms. Once those terms have been served that lawmaker may not run for a seat in that chamber again.
