Sisseton-Wahpeton Oayte tribal headquarters placed on lockdown Wednesday

(KWAT – Watertown, SD) A disturbance at the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate tribal headquarters Wednesday afternoon led authorities to place the building on lockdown.

The building remained closed for the rest of the day.

The exact nature of the threats being made in the building, and who was making them, has not been released by tribal officials.

However, in a letter posted on social media, Tribal Chairman J. Garret Renville said the person responsible for the disturbance had been taken into custody by law enforcement as of late Wednesday afternoon.

Renville said the tribe is committed to safety, security and the well-being of the tribal community.
