South Dakota state senator Jessica Castleberry has announced she is working with the state to return over $600,000 her business received in illegal COVID-19 relief funds. She received the money after the state Supreme court had ruled state lawmakers were not eligible to receive these dollars. Since then, President Pro Temp of the state Senate, Lee Schoenbeck of Watertown has asked the Legislature’s Executive Board to draft clarifying language regarding these funds. The goal is to prevent another incident like this from happening as well as provide those seeking public office how to do so and avoid such conflicts.
