Teen in Watertown accidentally stabs herself in altercation

(KXLG – Watertown, SD) On Friday, November 15, 2024, at approximately 11:44 PM, the Watertown Police Department and Watertown Fire Rescue responded to a report of a stabbing in southwest Watertown. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 16-year-old female with a knife wound to her abdomen. She was promptly transported to Prairie Lakes Hospital for medical treatment.

The investigation revealed that the 16-year-old female had entered a residence in southwest Watertown without permission and assaulted her 14-year-old sister, who was visiting the home. The occupants managed to remove the 16-year-old from the residence, but once outside, she assaulted a 15-year-old resident. An 18-year-old male, the older brother of the 15-year-old, intervened to separate the two.

During the altercation, the 16-year-old female produced a knife from her backpack and attempted to use it against the 18-year-old. In the ensuing struggle, she accidentally stabbed herself in the abdomen.

Further investigation determined that the 16-year-old was out on bond for prior charges and was supposed to be on house arrest. She was also found to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. After receiving medical clearance, she was arrested and transported to the Codington County Jail.

The 16-year-old is facing multiple charges, including Burglary in the 1st Degree, Simple Assault (Domestic), Simple Assault (Misdemeanor), and Aggravated Assault. Additional charges are referred to the Codington County State’s Attorney’s Office. She remains in custody at the Codington County Detention Center.

The individuals’ identities are not being released because they are minors.

The Watertown Police Department was assisted at the scene by Watertown Fire Rescue and the Codington County Sheriff’s Office.
