Watertown police arrest shoplifters after fleeing

(KXLG – Watertown, SD) On Thursday, October 17th, 2024, at approximately 6:54 PM, the Watertown Police Department responded to multiple reports of shoplifting at Running’s and Tractor Supply. The suspects fled the scene in a black Ford Fusion with North Dakota plates, which was later confirmed to be stolen from Fargo, North Dakota.

A South Dakota Highway Patrolman spotted the Ford Fusion turning south onto Interstate 29. The vehicle came to a stop, and the male driver fled on foot. For approximately 90 minutes, law enforcement conducted a search before locating the suspect in St. Mary’s Cemetery. The male, who had climbed onto a building and was unable to climb down, was assisted by Watertown Fire Rescue. He cooperated as he descended and was taken into custody by the Watertown Police Department.

The male driver was identified as 36-year-old Kyle Covington from Colorado, and the female passenger was identified as 46-year-old Tammy Dunfee, also from Colorado. Covington faces charges of Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Obstruction of a Law Enforcement Officer. Dunfee is charged with Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Both suspects are currently being held at the Codington County Detention Center.

The Watertown Police Department continues investigating the incident and extends gratitude to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, the Codington County Sheriff’s Office, and Watertown Fire Rescue for their assistance in resolving the situation.
