A Waubay woman has been sentenced to five years in federal prison on embezzlement and theft charges. According to the US Attorney for South Dakota 46-year-old Kayline Joy LaBelle was indicted for embezzlement and theft from an Indian Tribal Organization and Aiding and Abetting by a federal grand jury in July of 2023. The crimes occurred between 2018 to 2022 when LaBelle and other embezzled more than $150,000 belonging to the Buffalo Lake District of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Sioux Tribe. Along with the jail time, she will have to serve three years supervised release and ordered to pay $203,283.13 in restitution and $100 to the special assessment of the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
