West Nile virus detected in South Dakota for first time this season

The South Dakota Department of health reports a mosquito carrying the West Nile virus has been detected in South Dakota for the first time this season. The positive mosquito was found in Brookings county. Residents are reminded to take steps to protect themselves and loved one from mosquitoes by avoid outdoor activity in the morning and at dusk, remove standing water from you property, wear bug repellent and long sleeves while outdoors. According to the CDC in 2022 there were 1,126 cases of West Nile nationwide resulting in 90 deaths.
