South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley says an inmate who passed away while in the custody of the Department of Corrections, likely did not die of natural causes. He went on to say three deaths were most likely caused by overdoses. Jackley spoke about the Division of Criminal Investigation investigations into two recent inmates deaths, 39-year-old Jason Garreau in the state penitentiary in Sioux Falls and 24-year-old Joshua Arrow who was in the Jameson Annex. There have been eight deaths so far in 2025 among South Dakota DOC inmates, which is outpacing 2024.
